Post-Butt

The power of the image

Onomatopee 137

The phenomenon of bootyfication exists in many contexts, as varied as the exploitation of the body in colonialism to 90s hip-hop culture. Post-Butt analyses the virility of images in our mediated society. More rounded than that though, it’s a case study around the image of female butts, bootys, and behinds, and their influence in media, society and art.
Post-Butt travels through different periods in time and place to analyse the political meanings associated with the representation of the female buttocks. It then goes on to discuss the role of the booty in various cultural expressions such as film, internet art, music videos, dance and plastic surgery.
Deep inside, Post-Butt aims to reflect on how our society is conditioned by viral images that do not only exist in the digital context, and by offering more grounding to the virality of the image,it acknowledges a body-positivity beyond the hypes of the ages.

Featuring Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Guy Debord, Beyoncé, Kara Walker, Josephine Baker, Kim K. Sarah Baartman, Amalia Ulman and many more bootyful others!

I glutei sono protagonista della cultura dei mass-media, è il più democratico tra gli organi sessuali. Il fenomeno della “culificazione” esiste in diversi contesti, dallo sfruttamento del corpo tipico del colonialismo all’hip hop della golden age.

For the opening of the exhibition "Post Butt" by Melani de Luca, Belli presents two talks and a special book sale by Onomatopee, gallery and publishing house from Eindhoven.

OH MY GOD, LOOK AT THAT BOTTOM!

Post-Butt analyses the virality of images in our mediated society. More rounded, it is a case study around the image of female bottoms and behinds, and their influence in media, society and art. The posterior is the protagonist of mass-mediated cullture, it is the democratic sex organ par excellence. The phenomenon of bootyfication exists in many contexts, as varied as the exploitation of the body in colonialism to 90s hiphop culture.

Post-Butt goes through different periods in time and place, to analyse the political meaning of the usage of the image of the female buttocks. Then, it discusses the role of the booty in varied cultural expressions such as film, Internet art, music videos, dance and plastic surgery. Deep inside,

Post-butt aims to reflect on how our society is conditioned by viral images, that do not only exist in the digital context, but have deep consequences on our physical world as well.

presenting Onomatopee @McNally Jackson bookstore NY

On September 20th, founder Freek Lomme and Pernilla Ellens will speak on behalf of the public gallery and publisher Onomatopee, based in Dutch Design capital Eindhoven. Utilizing their location to mount globally relevant programs of various sizes and interests, Onomatopee produces self-initiated projects and host events to progressive individuals as well as artist-run and institutional organizations.

Over the course of its 10-year existence, the exhibition space has attracted an annual average of 15,000 visitors. Throughout the year, Onomatopee participates in many international art book fairs and regularly organizes shows abroad. Inspired by a DIY-attitude and a hunger for critical elevation, Onomatopee discusses and mediates a habitual visual sanctuary of pop culture, power and other environments of visual consciousness’ alike. Working as a transdisciplinary space, blending art, design, theory and creative writing together to inspire in-depth experiences and to provide food for thought.

During the event, Freek Lomme will discuss the founding of Onomatopee and how it has developed into what it is today. Pernilla Ellens will present her recent projects, ‘Post-Butt’ by Melani de Luca, analysing the image of female butts and their influence in media, society and art. Secondly ’Sense and Sensibility’, a platform for various artists and writers, to explore contradictions and oppositions by reflecting on gender issues, contemporary girlhood and object-subject relations.

We return to Freek Lomme to discuss the process of editing and publishing books focusing on the issue of tactility. Inspired by the workings of Onomatopee’s ‘Can you feel it?’ a project dealing with tactility and printmaking that took off when Freek started to wonder what tactility truly meant.
