Tectonic passages

Onomatopee Z0039

We live on a baseball and perhaps we don’t even notice it. The earth's continents are stitched together along the mid ocean ridge. Only 50 years ago plate tectonic theory was largely accepted by scientists as the cracks in the middle of the ocean were mapped. This created a new understanding of the patchwork of the earth, into the present-day global-village wherein so many living beings connect at the edges of the various territories.

Giuditta Vendrame is fascinated by this underwater world. She is interested in challenging and modulating the notion of political boundaries through the power of these natural forces. She does so by diving into the geological and biological composition of the deep sea, where plate boundaries are diverging, converging and transforming, inducing an ever-changing and trembling landscape. Combining visual and historiographic archival materials of natural history with samples from field research informed by exchanges with experts from the natural, social and political science she crafts visual and material impressions into an immersive multimedia installation. This spatial and sensorial setting opens up to experiencing these depths anew with the reality of the fragile tissue of human cultures of trade, property and migration at the borders.
