Intro to RISO workshop
Join us for an in-person event where you can dive into the wonderful world of risograph printing. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just curious about this unique printing technique, you are invited to explore the magic of riso.
This 4-hour workshop is taught in English. We start off with coffee and tea, an intro to the history of the risograph, a demo of our A3 risoprinter, then lunch break after which everyone gets to print their designs.
The workshop fee includes 5 prints in two colors of your own design in A3 (on our favorite off-white EOS paper at 90g thickness) and a list of resource links sent after the workshop.
IMPORTANT NOTE
This course covers riso operational techniques, but not file preparation. Come to class with your file already prepared (you can read through the "PREPARING YOUR FILES FOR RISO" section on this website for more details: risottostudio.com/pages/basic-print-setup). When students use in-class time to finish their files, they typically do not have the time to get properly trained on our equipment.
So make sure to bring two PDFs on USB :) Files should be A3-sized pdfs with a margin of 5 mm, set to grayscale, with a resolution of 300 DPI.
Cost: total workshop fee is € 45,- (or €30,- for students, email riso@onomatopee.net for the student discount code). If you cancel more than 12 hours before the workshop begins, your payment can be transferred to another Intro to RISO Course in the future.

RISO Workshop: Uncanny Type by KITeGG
Join us during DDW '24 with a new RISO Workshop: Uncanny Type by KITeGG. This workshop focuses on creating typefaces using custom AI tools that will be provided during the workshop. After an introduction, participants will join an experimental journey to create their own typefaces. The type specimens will be printed on a riso printer and exhibited at Onomatopee.

The workshop will be hosted by Paul Eßer and Francesco Scheffczyk, both research assistants at KITeGG. The workshop is based on their research about the democratisation and accessibility of AI interfaces.
KITeGG is a four-year joint project that aims to connect technology and society through design. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and four federal states. Participants include Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Trier University of Applied Sciences, the Cologne International School of Design (TH Köln) and the Offenbach and Schwäbisch Gmünd Universities of Applied Sciences.
Programme:
Day 1, 23.10. - Introduction to working with generative AI
During the first day we will give a general overview of type design and working with generative AI, especially text-to-image models. You will then start working and experimenting with small tools and workflows to get a better understanding of generative AI. Finally, we will prepare for the big experimental phase on the second day.
We will meet on day 1 (23.10.24) from 14:00 - 18:00.
Day 2, 24.10 - Experiment, experiment, experiment
The second day is all about experimenting. You will get to know all the tools we have prepared for you. You will work with them, try to break them and hack them. With the aim of creating unique typefaces that suit your ideas and style.
It will be an open atmosphere for everyone to work at their own pace and style. In the second half of the day we will slowly start to collect your results in type specimens that you have designed.
We will meet on day 2 (24.10.24) from 10:00 - 18:00. Lunch included.
Day 3, 25.10 - Presenting your typefaces
The third day will be about finalising your type specimens and printing them on a risograph printer. These will then be set up for an exhibition in the afternoon at Onomatopee, surrounded by other programme items.
You will also receive a type specimen to take home.
We will meet on day 3 (25.10.24) from 10:00 - 14:00. Feel free to stay longer for the exhibition!

Workshop Book design for RISO

Learn how to design and print books on risograph, taught by publisher and designer Tjobo Kho.
During this course students will dissect the bookmaking process from start to finish, and will learn to align their design methods with a RISO duplicator.
By understanding the limitations of this printing technique — such as printing each colour separately, shifting margins, incorporating multiple paper options, and preparing for not-fully-drying inks — participants can lean into designing within such restrictions to be able to make beautiful risoprinted books in low print runs and with full autonomy.
The course will consist of a short introduction into the RISO Duplicator, technical understanding of file preparation, plus a hint of bookbinding and making a small publication together.
The course is led by no kiss?, a small-scale printing and bookbinding studio in Amsterdam run by publisher and designer Tjobo Kho.
It is helpful if students have basic InDesign skills and a laptop with InDesign installed on it, but the course is accessible regardless! If you register and do not know InDesign, just send us a message and let us know.

RISO: Make a Zine Workshop
In this Make-a-zine workshop you will learn the Introductory basics of how to create small-scale print publications on risograph. Participants are given a template for how to make a quick-and-dirty A6-sized folded zine from A3 risoprinted paper. The instructor will lead everyone through the process of compiling/creating your imagery/text and either printing via the computer, or directly scanning into the riso duplicator to create your zine.
You’ll walk away with a beautiful 15-copy set of your newly printed zine to share with the world.
What you need to do:
Bring a series of pictures and texts that you’d like to add to your zines (or drawing tools to create your images). Each zine will require eight A6-sized pages of artwork, and one A3-sized poster image (that can be seen once the zine is unfolded).
If you plan to do your zine old-school through the scanner, bring physical copies of whatever you’d like to collage and assemble together. Otherwise, bring a laptop and digital files.
What will happen:
We’ll do a demonstration of our A3 risographs, then we will support you with whatever you need to know as you assemble your images and texts. Once your are complete, each participant learns how to operate the machinery and produces a 2-color zine.
This 5-hour workshop (10.00 - 15.00) is taught in English. We'll have coffee and tea, go through an introduction to the history of the risograph, followed by a demo of the A3 risoprinter, and a lesson on how to set up your zine. There will be a lunch break after which everyone gets to print their designs. The workshop fee includes 15 copies of your 2-color risoprinted zine, a mini RISO guide by Onomatopee, and a list of resource links sent after the workshop.

Valentina de Vito is Onomatopee’s graphic designer and RISO studio assistant. She got her Design and Communication Bachelor’s degree from Politecnico di Torino in Italy.
