Publishing Dialogues Workshop
Publishing as an artistic practice does not (only) mean the making of printed matter or other publishable material, both digital and physical. It involves the process that comes after the decision to publish: stating the intention of duplication so that more than one person can have access to the work. It is the first event in a life-cycle consisting of five, namely: publishing, manufacturing, distribution, reception, and survival. It is about questioning and reframing the conditions of these events.
What is the purpose for publishing a work, especially within the arts? In many cases, it concerns artistic research that, after publication, is followed up within the practice of the maker. An active dialogue based on the publication would, in this case, be desirable. In this way, the publication provides nourishment for the continuation of the research. How can such a dialogue be stimulated? How to reframe the previously described life-cycle to enable a conversation? How to publish such a dialogue?
During the workshop, we will map, visualize, and design possible interventions in the lifecycle of the printed matter that enable, or better yet, stimulate dialogue with the work, the artist, and fellow readers. We will work on a publishable small-scale experiment. Not to publish an final, immutable object, but to make a suggestion. A suggestion open to improvement, revision, dialogue, iteration, or even complete denial. A suggestion to start a dialogue with.
About Unformed Informed
Unformed Informed (Publishing) is a publishing studio within the arts, specializing in artists who explore language as a literary perspective, instrument, or construct. The outcome is the result of close collaboration with artists. The framework of each project is determined by the collaborations within which they arise. These frameworks not only determine the document itself but also the conditions under which they are being published. Unformed Informed (Publishing) is an initiative of curator and editor Rianne Zijderveld.
