We stay in the margins, we keep printing workshop

The workshop consists of two phases: a talk session and a zine-making session. The activity will initiate with the talk session revolving around the topic of self-publishing. We will introduce Not Just a Collective and talk about how we approach self-publishing as a collective and marginal practice. The conversation will be moderated by four members of Not Just a Collective: Lu Lin, Femke Kersten, Heike Renée de Wit, Alessandra Varisco.

Bringing the thoughts that originate from the discussion into practice, we will experiment with creating a collective zine in the zine-making session. The activity is based on practices of post-production and montage. Participants will move between material and immaterial archives in their phones to generate a new image based on content that is already there. The image aims to capture an instant of daily routine while stimulating reflection on cultural, social, economic, political value of objects in your surrounding.The process is organised into five steps: Observation; Selection; Post-Production; Interpretation; Making and printing.

Through the proposed steps, Not Just a Collective aims to critically reflect on content creation for zine making. It is accessible for many to create a story to be narrated through independent publishing. While sharing one of the possibilities for making zines, we would like to initiate a discussion on what is worth considering while patch-working content for independent publishing. As a collective we consider printing and publishing as a political act. Through publishing we want to emphasise the strength of discussions based on everyday life, objects and values.

About Not Just a Collective

Not Just a Collective is composed of self-publishers, multidisciplinary artists, researchers, and designers who all share a common desire: to engage in discussions about artistic progress and to create a space for emerging international artists. To establish a supportive framework, Not Just a Collective has developed various publishing practices that focus on facilitating open spaces for sharing and co-learning. In this manner, the collective also hosts a series of art and cultural events aimed at enriching multi-disciplinary practices within the realm of art ecology. Moreover, it transcends the definition of a mere collective; rather, it is a community with the goal of nurturing autonomous activities and fostering cultural participation by promoting accessibility.

OUTLINE's collective publishing workshop is a proposal for an editing and publishing practice shaped as a parlour game. In this workshop, participants work together to create a reader, employing elements of roleplay and bootlegging. The publication is approached as a kind of exquisite corpse, building an aggregate pattern of references through dialogue and speculation. During this afternoon, the act of print publishing and its various stages–selecting, editing, designing, printing–are explored through play and conversation. The workshop starts with an introduction into OUTLINE's publishing practice and a short reading session, and ends with printing the publication.

About OUTLINE

OUTLINE is a publishing platform and floating collective that aims to create interventions within intermediate spaces, and accelerate an exchange by connecting ideas, artifacts, individuals and localities. Recent projects include a series of get-togethers in OT301 (Amsterdam), a publication and exhibition with Mateo Vega and a series of audio collages aired on Stranded FM (Utrecht). The project is currently run by Tjobo Kho and Jan-Pieter 't Hart.
