‘Room in the Elephant’ is a project part of the Waew Food Programme. Waew is a Thai artist passionate about combining food, Thai culture, performance and artworks. The Waew Food Programme reects her personal questions and desires in relation to larger topics as politics, migration and cultural dierences.

This time Waew enters the Dutch artworld in her Thai Trojan horse: a self-constructed elephant (with a room in it). At the 21st and 22nd of May she will serve 1-person Thai dinners inside this elephant at Onomatopee. We will ensure that all COVID-19 guidelines are followed. So grab your chance and book a spot for your rst corona-proof dinner outside of the house!

Waew (full name: Jeeraphat Voraphotmuangman) was born (1985) in Bangkok, Thailand. In her own words: ‘For the last 3 years I have been travelling to Eindhoven, where I started cooking Thai food and developed The Waew Food Program. I loved the cultural experience and I realised that the integrity of ”Thai food” had been compromised over time by economic and cultural influences. With The WFP I am able to combine my work as a artist and my cooking skills. In the first edition of the WFP (in collaboration with Lucas Maassen) we explored several personal and political topics at Wall Street Eindhoven (Centre for art, food and alternative economics). The WFP is not just about food, its about value! It advocates an economical model more based on subtle values and less based on money.
The Tuk-Tuk I presented in the Van Abbe Museum in May ’19 is completely made out of lottery tickets. It is representing the surreal economy that is related to the the national lottery and superstitious nature of Thai people that seek for luck and fortune in all everyday objects.
For my new project to develop I am using another Thai symbol which is the elephant. After cooking laste year an experimental dinner called ‘The Elephant in the Room' with students from the DAE. The idea was born to make a restaurant this time 'The Room in the Elephant’, as a pop-up restaurant. Due to the 1,5 meter restriction that we have to respect nowadays I decided to make the restaurant space for only1 person at the time. This way we can still go outside and enjoy nice Thai food as well as experience to travel to a different world inside my elephant.’

ArTiSt BaR: 'Let’s Dance to a VR Riot'

What will the protest song of a future look and sound like? This is the question we will be playing with after performances from the Effenaar’s Smart Venue artist-in-residence Jim Brady and local artist and musician Tom Verbruggen.

On May 10th The Artist Bar will showcase technologies being used by musicians and designers next Onomatopee's Eindhoven Footnotes exhibition/research area. Within these contexts the work being done by musicians and artists can come into contact with research concerning citizenship and the smart city.
In times of great atomisation we should come together to exchange ideas and approaches. Expect experimentation, drinks, discussions and free zines.

All Welcome, All Free. (apart from our honesty bar)

In tight collaboration with the Effenaar’s Smart Venue
